WHITE PAPER ON BAUXITE

  • State to hold public hearing to convince tribals on mining

Vijayawada: It looks like Jana Sena chief and actor Pawan Kalyan’s word of advice prevailed upon Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in handling the bauxite mining issue in the forest area of Visakhapatnam district.

It was on November 12, the Jana Sena chief had met the Chief Minister in his camp office in Vijayawada and advised him against using force for land acquisition in Visakhapatnam for the bauxite mining.

Pawan Kalyan had initially supported the farmers of Undavalli, Penumaka and Bethapudi villages of the capital region on the land pooling issue and had requested the State government to withdraw moves to invoke Land Acquisition Act.

He had suggested that the government hold consultations with the land owners and convince them by offering additional package. Later, during his interaction with the Chief Minister, the Jana Sena chief had advised the same procedure to be followed for the land acquisition in Visakhapatnam for bauxite mining.

With the Chief Minister announcing that the government would hold public hearing and convince the tribals on land acquisition for bauxite, the Jana Sena leaders here claim that the State government’s U turn is only because of the intervention of their leader.

“The government had already issued a GO to acquire lands for the bauxite mining despite the tribals holding protests. But, it had decided to keep the GO in abeyance and hold consultations with the tribals only after Pawan Kalyan had requested the Chief Minister,” asserted Bonda Srinivasa Rao, a senior leader from Jana Sena in the city. He further said that the Chief Minister had also taken decision to hold consultations with the capital area farmers on land pooling following the advice of the Jana Sena chief. “It is good that the Chief Minister is respecting our leader and we welcome it,” Srinivasa Rao, elder brother of TDP MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, said.

However, the Telugu Desam, is not prepared to give the credit exclusively to the Jana Sena on putting the GO on hold and taking public opinion on bauxite mining, it is equally firm on claiming the credit.

“We have welcomed the Jana Sena chief to give his views on issues concerning the State and people. Jana Sena is our ally and we keep consulting the party on various issues and the bauxite mining was one such issue,” asserted Telugu Desam general secretary and spokesman, Varla Ramaiah.

He further said that the issue was first identified by the party senior leader and former minister Manikumari who had later referred the same to the Chief Minister.

“Even our party leaders from Visakhapatnam have explained the issue, particularly the opposition from the tribals and the Left parties to the Chief Minister. Later Pawan Kalyan also gave his views. Based on all these consultations, the Chief Minister had taken the decision to hold consultations. It is a welcome move in democracy and it shows the Chief Minister’s concern for the people,” Varla Ramaiah said.
