Prakasam barrage faces threat

Experts against proposed tunnel to Sitanagaram hill for approach road to capital region
Vijayawada: Amaravati capital may be deprived of straight approach road connecting national highway at Kanaka Durga varadhi as the engineering experts are opposing a tunnel through Sitanagaram hill as the excavation work may pose threat to the 5-decades-old Prakasam barrage.
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had suggested a 16.7-km connecting road to the capital without any curves. He advised the officials to provide a tunnel through the hill if necessary to provide curve-free route. A few of the engineering experts opine that the excavation work for the tunnel to Sitanagaram hill may pose threat to the safety of Prakasam barrage as the vibrations could damage the strength of the barrage structure. The engineering experts of the city said that the excavation of tunnel should not be carried out at any cost to safeguard Prakasam barrage.
Commenting on the proposal, former minister Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao said there is a proposal in the past to divert Kondaveeti vagu in the Amaravati capital region to Krishna river during rainy season to prevent inundation of thousands of acres of land in the capital region. However, the officials failed to complete the proposal due to hills. He said though modern technology is available, it is highly expensive and there is no need to spend huge amount on the tunnel for laying a straight road to capital putting the barrage at risk.
Former standing committee member of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Ch Babu Rao said that when the officials carried out blasting of a hill near Undavalli caves to clear the approach road to CM residence, the archaeology department officials issued notice asking them to stop the work as it would pose threat to the ancient caves.
He said the government should not take unilateral decisions without considering experts on the proposed tunnel as it may pose threat to Prakasam barrage. School of Planning and Architecture planning department head Abdul Razak opined that the proposed tunnel may be too expensive.
