Hyderabad: Good news for residents living in and around the Secunderabad Cantonment. Gough Road, the connecting link between AOC and Ramakrishnapuram, will not be closed for the traffic, at least for now.

The General-Officer-Commanding on Friday received instructions from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to extend the deadline of closure till May 21, 2016.

However, the night-time restrictions between 10 pm and 7 am would continue to be in force. The Army had earlier decided that the Gough Road would be closed to general public starting from December 1, 2015.

The decision of the MoD comes in the wake of the recent Allahabad High Court on November 18, 2015 ordering the reopening of roads in Mathura Cantonment which were closed by the Army in almost identical circumstances to that in Secunderabad.

S Chandrasekhar, founder, Anti-Corruption Enforcement Forum (ACEF), Secunderabad, said, “This is just a temporary relief. The Army needs to reopen all the other roads that have been closed. There is a directive from the Ministry of Defence dated January 7, 2015 asking to reopen all public roads in cantonments that are outside unit lines.”

B T Srinivasan of United Federation of Resident Welfare Associations said that it is a huge relief for over 13 lakh people living in the Secunderabad Cantonment and hoped that there would be a permanent solution to the problem..
