Visakhapatnam: Indigenously built India’s first nuclear submarine INS Arihant in all probability would be commissioned and was showcased during the Inter national Fleet Review to be held from February 4, 2016 in the city.

The ballistic missile submarine (S73) weighing around 6,000 tonnes and being built under Advanced Technology Vessel project is reaching completion of sea acceptance trials which began last year.

“Finishing touches are being given and it is likely to be inducted into the navy before the International Fleet Review commences here next February,’’ said a senior naval officer requesting anonymity.

India is the fifth country to build a nuclear-powered submarine, and holds a unique record in the world. All the four developed nations had faced minor and major hitches while completing their project but Arihant never faced any problem either at construction stage at the Ship Building Centre or during sea acceptance trials, the officer said.

Arihant was launched on July 26, 2009 on the occasion of Vijay Diwas (Kargil War) by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. INS Arihant is to be the first of the expected five in the class of submarines designed and constructed as a part of the Indian Navy’s secret Advanced Technology Vessel project. The Arihant-class submarines are reported to be based on the Akula class submarine.

The crew is being trained on nuclear submarine INS Chakra, which was leased from Russia. The vessel will be powered by an 83mw pressurised light water reactor with enriched uranium fuel. The official said an 80 mw nuclear reactor was integrated into the hull of the submarine in January 2008, which was built by L&T Hazira ship building facility.

The pride vessel Arihant has four vertical launch tubes, which can carry 12 (three per launch tube) smaller K-15 missiles or four r larger K-4 missiles. The K-4 has a longer range of 3,500 km which was put into trials recently.
