Vijayawada: The State government’s move to acquire land in 17 villages under Tulluru mandal in Guntur district appears to be snowballing into a major political crisis. It has already created fissures in the TDP- BJP alliance.
The BJP unit State secretary Jammula Shyam Kishore on Tuesday expressed his party’s opposition to acquisition of fertile lands as proposal by the government in Tulluru mandal.
Minister for Social Welfare Ravela Kishore Babu, while reacting to the Shyam Kishore’s statement, said it was high time that the TDP severed its ties with the BJP. Both the TDP and the BJP are irreconcilably at variance with each other on the issue. The BJP leaders have been advising the government to utilise the vast waste land available in Guntur and Krishna districts for building the capital city.
Meanwhile, the farmers in all the 17 villages are making a strong move to form village-level committees by roping in tenant farmers and farm labourers too. There is no organisation or political force to guide them because the farmers are suspicious of politicians. They are, however, seeking support from politicians whom they trust as pro-farmer lobby.
Former MP Yalamanchili Sivaji, who has championed farmers’ cause, former minister Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao, Lok Satta chief Jayaparkash Narayan, secretaries of the CPI and CPI-M K Ramakrishna and P Madhu have already extended their support to the farmers in their fight against the government.
The leaders of the Congress and YSR Congress too have been visiting the farmers and boosting the morale of the farmers. The BJP’s support now is a shot in the arm for the farmers.
One of the farmers, Anumolu Gandhi, a former president of the BJP Vijayawada urban unit, who hails from Lingayapalem village, said the farmers are baffled over the government’s move to acquire as many as 30,000 acres of land.
