Siddapuram Lift Irrigation Scheme revived
The State government has increased the allocation for the Siddapuram Lift Irrigation Scheme to Rs 120 crore. Siddapuram tank in the Nallamala forest is the biggest water body in the district. The scheme is envisaged to provide drinking water to 12 villages and irrigation water to 23,000 acres.

As part of the lift irrigation scheme, 2 tmcft of water is drawn from Telugu Ganga reservoir to meet the drinking and irrigation needs of the area through Siddapuram tank. The then Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy laid the foundation stone for the lift irrigation scheme a decade ago. The works were taken up at a cost of Rs 45 crore.
Following the tragic demise of Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash, the works came to an abrupt halt. While joining the ruling Telugu Desam Party from the Opposition YSR Congress Party in Vijayawada on April 28, Srisailam MLA Budda Rajasekhar Reddy urged Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to initiate measures to complete the Siddapuram Lift Irrigation Scheme.
The Chief Minister responded promptly and directed Water Resources Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao to look into the matter. The Minister increased the project cost to Rs 120 crore within one month after studying the lift irrigation scheme. Kurnool Irrigation Chief Engineer G Chittibabu and Executive Engineer Ramachandra Rao inspected the project site on Sunday. They directed DEE Vijayanand to initiate measures to resume the works of the irrigation scheme at the earliest.
