Anantapur: Many farmers in the district are advocating transfer of subsidy amount into their accounts relating to supply of subsidised groundnut seeds so that they can purchase quality seeds on their own and at any place of their choice. This saves even the government lot of procurement effort, time and even funds for carrying on such a massive exercise.

Every year a massive exercise was being undertaken by procurement agencies including AP Seeds Limited, Oil Federation, Market Federation and NSC etc, which are procuring the seeds from various districts and even neighbouring states including Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and even Telangana.

Despite efforts put in by the government, farmers are unhappy with the quality of seeds as they were being procured by multiple agencies and a host of sellers scattered in multiple States. Obuleshu, a farmer from Garladinne mandal said that it would be better for the government to simply transfer the subsidy money to the farmers’ accounts and leave the groundnut seed purchase business to the farmers’ choice.

Narasimhulu, another farmer of Raptadu village said that it would be a good proposition if the farmers are allowed to buy the seed of their choice and make their own arrangements in advance.

Joint Director of Agriculture (JDA) Sriram Murthy speaking to ‘The Hans India’ said that from next year onwards, they are planning to engage NGOs, who would play an active role in promoting own seed production by farmers as already some of them are doing it in select mandals. Out of a requirement of 4.50 lakh quintals of groundnut seed, 3.90 lakh quintals have been procured and 80,000 quintals to 90,000 farmers distributed.
