Kurnool: The much- awaited airport at Orvakal is likely to come up very soon with Union Civil and Aviation Department, New Delhi, giving its nod. In no time, the people of Kurnool are going to see planes taking off and landing at Orvakal.

The airport has been proposed to be built between Nanoor and Orvakal villages, which is hardly 20 km away from the main town Kurnool. Three airports have been accorded permission in the State of which Orvakal is one among them.

About three months ago, during a meeting with the State and Central government representatives held at Delhi, the aviation authorities had made it clear that the three airports sanctioned to the State have to completed on a war-footing, revealed an official.

Meanwhile, on the directions of the State government the district authorities have identified a suitable land of 1,080 acres between Orvakal and Nanoor villages and handed it over to the aviation department. Even the officials of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) were said to have had visited the proposed site, and after inspection, the authorities have declared the land to be suitable for the construction for airport.

The sources also revealed that on the basis of No Objection Certificate for the construction of airport at Orvakal by the DGCA authorities, the district administration was busy in inviting tenders from reputed and recognised agencies, who have vast experience in building airports.

The tender process was expecting to completed by the end of October. After the completion of tender process, the finalised agency would carry out the construction and complete it within 18 months.

The construction includes a runway measuring a distance of 3.5 km besides a terminal building and a protection wall surrounding the airport.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was said to have ordered the concerned district authorities to complete the construction of three airports by the year 2019 as per the sources.
