Vijayawada: The State government along with the technical cooperation of Swiss government to transform public and government buildings into energy-efficient buildings.
Principal Secretary of Energy, CRDA and Vice-Chairman of State Energy Conservation Mission (SECM) Ajay Jain has said in a meeting on ‘Energy efficient and thermally comfortable public buildings in Andhra Pradesh’ as part of Indo-Swiss Building Energy Efficiency Project (EEP) here on Wednesday.
Speaking at the meeting, Ajay Jain said “buildings consume over 30 per cent of electricity used in the country. The amount of electricity used was rising primarily because of the construction and building operations of the new buildings particularly for air conditioning.”
He mentioned that Andhra Pradesh is the first State in the country to make Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) as mandatory for all commercial buildings based on area and not the connected power load, by amending the existing rules.
He also said that “AP is the first to take up large-scale implementation of energy efficiency projects. They distributed around two crore LED bulbs to one crore consumers. Installation of 5.5 lakh LED streetlights in place of ordinary streetlights, distribution of two lakh five-star rated fans and installation of energy efficient pump sets were other achievements.”
As part of promoting energy conservation the buildings might yield 40 to 60 per cent energy savings. The State PWD department is responsible for construction of public buildings, and assist in designing energy-efficient and thermally comfortable buildings, he said.
Director of Cooperation & Counselor for Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Daniel Zeigerer said “the five-year project would focus on increasing energy efficiency. It is possible to construct buildings that use less energy and the AP State would be a role model for the entire country.”
He also released a poster on energy efficiency. Commissioner of CRDA, Sridhar said that the motto was to make urban buildings sources of 100 per cent energy production.
