Chittoor: Though the ruling party has an absolute majority in the Chittoor Municipal Council, the choice of Mayor is unlikely to be a unanimous one as many contestants have thrown their hats in the ring. Following the murder of the erstwhile Mayor Anuradha Katari and her husband Mohan Katari on November 15, 2015, the post of Mayor fell vacant. While Hemalatha Katari, daughter-in-law of the slain Mayor is likely to be the official candidate of the TDP, several corporators are lobbying for the top civic job along with Chittoor MLA D Satya Prabha who is backing her own candidate, VS Nalini, corporators from the 3rd division in the city.

The post of Chittoor Mayor is reserved for women from the Backward Classes. Out of 50 divisions in Chittoor Municipal Corporation, 8 divisions are reserved for BC women. Apart from VS Nalini, all seven corporators RV Alli Rani ( 7th Division ), T Indu ( 27th Division ), N Muthamma ( 42nd Division ), M Padmavathi ( 47th Division ) , CM Vijaya ( 45th Division ) belonging to the TDP are said to be in the fray. Satya Prabha who met Nara Lokesh a couple of days ago is believed to have lobbied for Nalini.

What works to Nalini’s advantage is the fact that she has been actively participating in the party activities in the last couple of years. Certain senior leaders in the district are also said to be indirectly supporting her candidature. However, Praveen Katari, son of Anuradha and Mohan is confident that his wife Hemalatha would be nominated as the party candidate on sympathetic grounds. Hemalatha is expected to contest the by-election from the 33rd division.

Speaking to The Hans India, district TDP President G Srinivasulu made it clear that the TDP corporators would elect their leader democratically as per the guidelines of the TDP high command. “We are confident that unanimity would be achieved among the TDP members of Chittoor Municipal Council. There is no question of entertaining sealed-cover practices. We have two-thirds majority in the council and only a TDP candidate would be the next Mayor,” said Srinivasulu.
