Vijayawada: Opposition parties and other organisations have formed a Joint Action Committee (JAC) to save Swaraj Maidan (PWG Grounds) in the heart of the city.

A round-table was convened by the Tax Payers Association (TPA) of Vijayawada and garnered the support of political and non-political groups and decided to intensify agitation until the government rollback its plan to build City Square in the grounds.

The meet was held under the chairmanship of MLC Boddu Nageswara Rao on Thursday and was attended by around 30 different organisations, including Congress, YSRCP, CPI, CPM and other political parties.

Former Minister Vadde Shobhanadreeswara Rao said that several metro cities in the country like Himachal Pradesh, Kolkata and Haryana are striving to protect and preserve grounds in the respective cities.

But, the Andhra Pradesh government is doing reverse and using open place for commercial purposes, he alleged.

Swaraj Maidan is a historical place and it is situated in the heart of the city, he said. He appealed to the people to take part in agitation to save the PWD ground. The JAC would be ready to fight in the court, he said.

MLC Boddu Nageswara Rao said that the PDF MLCs will fight in the Winter session of the Assembly against the government decision.

“We are opposing the construction of City Square at Swaraj Maidan and exert pressure on the government,” he said.

Former Mayor Dr Jandhyala Shankar suggested to the government to select another place for the construction of City Square.

Swaraj Maidan is one and only place for conducting exhibitions, meetings and other important programmes, he pointed out.

Former MLAs Malladi Vishnu and Velampalli Srinivasa Rao said that all political parties, organisations will stage dharnas to save Swaraj Maidan.

Later, the round table meeting elected MLC Boddu Nageswara Rao as the president, TPA secretary MV Anjaneyulu as convener and G Vijaya Prakash as co-convener of JAC.

Tax Payers Association president V Sambi Reddy, secretary MV Anjaneyulu, CPM leader Ch Babu Rao, CPI city secretary D Sankar and other leaders participated in the round-table
meeting.
