Kakinada: In a startling revelation that came to light in the civil affairs department, scores of white card holders who are covered under the BPL category are in reality are financially well placed and are enjoying the benefits of the scheme that is meant for BPL families.

The district has in excess of 90 percent white card holders out of 14.35 lakh households in the district (as per the 2011 census).

As per the available statistics, the district with a population of 55 lakh population has 33.65 lakh voters. Every month, an amount of Rs.900 crore subsidy is disbursed on account of Public Distribution System(PDS).
It is learnt that 15.26 lakh white card holders are enjoying various benefits in the form of subsidized schemes.

The civil supplies authorities issued as many as 91,806 white cards during Janma Bhoomi programme conducted in the first and second weeks of this month (January) taking the total white card holders to 16.17 lakh.

The 1.46 lakh pink cards add to the burgeoned list making the total PDS cards to 17.63 lakh for the 14.35 lakh BPL families.

The BJP’s East Godavari unit president Yenimireddy Malakondayya alleged that there is a bias in selecting the list of beneficiaries as TDP activists are given the first preference thereby denying benefits to the genuine beneficiaries.

The civil supplies department should pick the beneficiary on the basis of financial status but not on political affiliation, he suggested.

The bogus beneficiaries should be weeded out of the list, the BJP leader demanded. Joining the chorus, the CPM district unit secretary Duvva Seshu Babji pointed out loopholes in issuing white cards saying that despite a sound financial background, several people are illegally seeking white cards to avail medical and education benefits.

Reacting to the allegations, East Godavari District supply Officer(DSO) Vemuri Ravi Kiran said that the white cards are issued only after due verification of Aaadhar and other related documents. He ruled out that there is no chance for duplication of cards.
