Hindupur (Anantapur): District Collector Kona Sasidhar welcomed the four-member Inter-Ministerial Central team lead by J K Rathod and apprised them about the district and its history of drought, at the Sericulture Research Institute here on Monday.

He sought a Central assistance of Rs 2,161.38 crore for the drought-stricken district. The team members saw a photo exhibition picturing the severity of the drought and withering away of all crops due to the failed monsoon. The Collector also gave a PowerPoint presentation on the history and demography of the district and explained to them the severity of drought for over a century. He said that 65 out of 100 years were severe and 16 out of the recent past 19 years were terrible reducing the farmers to indebtedness and paupers. Even 100 feet bores sunk by farmers failed to yield water.

The Collector further said that unless the team took 3 days time to visit the district; its severity cannot be felt. Sasidhar felt that the team should have visited the district in November to see for themselves the parched fields and dried up crops. He also recommended 200 days of NREGS work for the farm labourers in the district as a special case. Giving a break-up, the Collector said that agriculture crop compensation itself requires Rs 1,203 crore; Rs 1,075 crore for input subsidy; Rs 169 crore for horticulture; Rs 56 crore for fodder; Rs 70 crore for drinking water; Rs 27 crore for sericulture; Rs 208 crore for minor irrigation; Rs 309 crore for NREGS work and Rs 119 crore for nutrition of mother and children in rural areas. Along with Kona Sasidhar and Joint Collector Lakshmikantham has accompanied the team. Ministers Palle Raghunatha Reddy and Paritala Sunitha also met the team and requested for liberal assistance to the district. They also submitted representations to them.
