Visakhapatnam: Pomp, gaiety and devotion marked the Maha Sivaratri festival here on Friday with all Siva temples jampacked with devotees rush since wee hours to perform ‘abhishekams’ and special ‘archanasa.

All temple committees, including that of Goddess Durgalamma temple at Poorna Market area headed by its Chairman Chandamal Agarwal, made elaborate arrangements for the devotees and serpentine queues were witnessed since morning at all the major temples in the city. All temples were decked up and the priests began performing ‘Rudrabhishekam’ in some main temples in the night.

The arrangement of ‘Jyothirlingas’ at Parvathi Muktheswara temple in Sector-6, MVP Colony, was the cynosure of the festival where the devotees thronged in thousands. Similarly, hectic rush was witnessed at Omkareswara temple atop Kailasagiri tourist spot, Kasi Visweswara temple in Sector-4, MVP Colony, and other Siva temples in the city.

A large number of Satya Sai devotees performed ‘Mahanyasaka Poorva Ekadasi Rudrabhishekam’, ‘Laksha Bilwarchana’ and ‘Parvati Parameswara Kalyanam’ on the occasion of Maha Sivaratri at Sri Satya Sai Prema Sadan on Friday. District president V R Nageswara Rao and City Seva Samithi Convener P R S N Naidu were also present.

Meanwhile, thousands of devotees thronged Maha Kumbhabhishekam performed by MP Dr T Subbarami Reddy on the Rama Krishna Beach for the one crore Siva Lingams specially arranged on the beach. Arrangements were made allowing devotees to perform ‘Jalabhishekam’ to Siva Lingam on their own. Visakha Sri Sarada Peethadhipathi Swaroopanandendra Saraswathi Maha Swamy, MLC Dr M V V S Murthi, founder of Veluvolu Trust Veluvolu Basava Punnaiah, tollywood actors Suman, Rajasekhar , Jeevitha Rajasekhar, former Union Minister Killi Kruparani, Congress leaders Pedada Ramani Kumari, Dronamraju Srinivas and D Varada Reddy were among those who took part in the Jalabhishekam along with Dr Reddy.

The entire beach wore a festive look with pandals and stalls. The city police made elaborate arrangements on the entire Beach Road for the night time also as thousands take a holy dip in the sea on Saturday morning after observing ‘Jaagaran’ on Friday night.

Actor Suman honoured:
TSR Lalithakala Parishat honoured actor Suman, who essayed the roles of Lord Venkateswara, Lord Rama and Lord Siva in Telugu movies. He was honoured with a title of ‘Adhyathmika Nata Praveena’ during the spiritual meeting held on the occasion.
