Eluru: The State police administration has decided to provide 13 patrolling vehicles to West Godavari district alone, where highest rate of accidents has been registered, according to Director General of Police (DGP) N Sambasiva Rao here.

After conducting a review meeting with SPs, DSPs and other police officials at the District Police office here on Saturday, the DGP addressed a media conference.

Speaking on the occasion, the DGP said it was revealed that the accident rate in West Godavari was very high when compared to other districts. In view of this, to control the road accidents, the Police Department has decided to implement new methods.

As part of this, already 39 black spots have been identified in the district, where scores of deaths occurred in road accidents.

In West Godavari district, accidents occurred at 39 places under 13 police stations on the National Highway (NH).

The Department has decided to provide13 patrolling vehicles to 13 police stations on the NH, he added. These vehicles will be sent to the respective stations by March 15. Each vehicle will conduct checks between 8 and 14 kilometres on the National Highway.

The DGP said dividers have been set up on the outskirts of various villages and regretted over the villagers travelling on wrong routes for a distance of 400 metres.

These were also causing accidents on the road. He said drones will take a snap of such places and send to the higher officials concerned. He said that the Police Department was also concentrating on road engineering.

Another two Apps are being prepared to warn the commuters on the black spots. When a vehicle reaches a black spot, it will give a voice alert to the vehicle driver. CC cameras will also be set up in these areas.

The DGP said that the location of liquor shops on the National Highways was also one of the causes for the rise in accidents and as per the Supreme Court directives, from next April, the liquor shops will be removed on the National highways.

He said that 40 per cent of the penalties collected through Motor Vehicle Act, will be spent on the Road Accident Control Programme (RACP). He said the Road Accident Control Programme will be implemented from West Godavari district for the first time in the State and later will be extended to other districts.

Northern Coast IG Kripananda Tripathi Ujhela, Eluru Range DIG PVS Ramakrishna, District SP Bhaskar Bhushan, Rajahmundry Urban SP B Rajaumari and West Godavari Additional SP V Ratna participated in the meeting.
