Visakhapatnam: The city police on Monday arrested a man identified as P Rambabu (47), who along with three others was involved in last year’s tonsured hair theft case in Simhachalam.

It should be recalled that four unidentified persons decamped with 10 bags of tonsured hair from Simhachalam devasthanam on February 14, 2016.

Rambabu is a resident of Madhepalli village of Eluru district. Jampanna another accused, who accompanied Rambabu has already been nabbed in similar case at Kandukuru of Prakasam district.

Disclosing details, Deputy Commissioner of Police (crimes) T Ravi Kumar Murthy said Rambabu was an ex-bidder of human hair at several temples in the region. Rambabu, along with one of his friends Challa Jampanna, a resident of Bhadrachalam, used to bid at various temples and then sell it to the agents.

In a bid to make quick money, the duo hatched a plan to steal tonsured hair from temples and sell it to some brokers. In January 2016, they robbed hair at Kanipakam temple at Chittor district. After success of Kanipakam, two more friends joined the duo to commit theft at Simhachalam.

“On February 14, they gained entry into the store room by breaking grills and fled away with 10 bags of tonsured hair (around 150 kgs), which was worth Rs 7.5 lakh,” the DCP said.

He said that the hair was sold to a broker in Tamil Nadu for Rs 7.5 lakh. The police recovered Rs 4.5 lakh. The police focused on the bidders and basing on the call data, they arrested Rambabu.

However, it was Rambabu who called executive officer of Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy of Kandukuru and got Jampanna arrested. Rambabu during the interrogation revealed that since the last four months, Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy had been appearing in his dreams and warned him to reveal the truth. Frightened, he called the EO exposed the hide of Jampanna.
