Vijayawada: About 280 eve-teasing cases were registered in the city since January 26 and it has been observed that the offenders lacked good relations with their family members and friends.While Mahila Rakshak teams are successfully preventing eve-teasing on women and girls in the city, on the other hand, Vasavya Mahila Mandali (VMM) founder and former MP Chennupati Vidya has been conducting counselling sessions to the eve-teasers for changing their attitude towards women and society.

Commissioner of Police D Gautam Sawang appointed nearly 50 Mahila Rakshak teams in the city to prevent eve-teasing on women and girl students. He also identified as many as 64 eve-teasing places. The Mahila Rakshak teams conducted awareness sessions on Sexual Harassment in Working Place Act, 2013 at nearly 103 institutions including private organisations and colleges.

Deputy Commissioner of Police G Pala Raju said that all institutions must appoint internal complaint committee at work places, where more than 10 women are working. He said that all hostels management must implement the provisions of AP Women and Children Institutions License Act, 1956 in hostels for protection of women and girl students. Nearly 50,000 women and girl students are living at hostels in city.

He said that Mahila Rakshak teams were conducting gender equality awareness sessions to all section of people in colonies, schools, colleges, RTC buses to prevent eve-teasing on women. “The police department has set a 50-day deadline to all hostel managements for implementing AP Women and Children Institutions License (APW&CIL) Act, 1956,” he informed. He said that Mahila Rakshak teams were conducting counselling to the eve-teasers under their parents' presence.

Chennupati Vidya said that illiterate and single parent sons were committing eve-teasing on women and girls due to lack of good relation with their parents. She requested them for changing their attitude on women and girls because women participation was must for development.

She said that VMM team members conducted counselling to eve-teasers for four hours on different subjects including society, family relationship and college lifestyle. She mentioned she has set goals to the eve-teasers for becoming role models to others in society.
