Parchuru: The chilli farmers expressed anger at the government for not taking any initiative to provide minimum support price to their produce.

They demanded that the government should purchase the crop through Markfed. The farmers staged protests on the Old Madras Road at Chinanandipadu, Parchuru, Karemchedu, Kusapadu X Roads, Daggubadu, Inkollu, Koniki and nearby villages and demanded immediate action from the government.

They sought a price of Rs 10,000 per quintal for chillies.Last year the chilli farmers received a good market price and earned Rs 8,000 per quintal.

Due to the prevailing drought conditions in the district, many farmers of other crops shifted to chillies and cultivated it in more acres.

But this year, the weather has not been favourable and the farmers in Prakasam district faced a tough time. They managed to get only 50 per cent of their usual production.

At the same time, the merchants valued the produce at Rs 3,000 to 4,000 per quintal as the quality of chillies got affected due to unfavourable weather conditions.
