Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences makes a giant leap in research
Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) made a big leap in research with the formal launching of advanced facility ‘Centre for Advanced Research (CfAR)’ here on Friday. The CfAR was funded by munificent donation of Rs 12 crore by a Mumbai based Vital Laboratories Private Limited (VLPL), housing major research programmes to drive patient oriented discoveries over a long horizon.

The CfAR was funded by munificent donation of Rs 12 crore by a Mumbai based Vital Laboratories Private Limited (VLPL), housing major research programmes to drive patient oriented discoveries over a long horizon.

Speaking on the occasion, SVIMS Director cum Vice-Chancellor Dr TS Ravikumar said CfAR would centralise all high end research. The host of facilities proposed in CfAR include dry-labs, consisting of population research, health services research and support services such as biostatistics, data management and clinical research infrastructure, he informed.
It also focus on infection, inflammation and immunity and also include Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDL), Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) research including resistance microbe research while one floor will be dedicated to stem cell biology, regenerative medicine and pancreatic islet cell laboratory.
Ravikumar said that SVIMS VRDL facility is the nodal agency for the entire state for diagnosis of Swine flu and also lending its services for detection of Swine flu to other states including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha and Chattisgarh. The CfAR will enable SVIMS to take up diagnosis of Swine flu cases on fast track manner helping hospital to fight the disease effectively.
He said the major activity to be taken up by CfAR will be preparation of population registry, which will be a ready reference on the health status of the people including the details of people suffering with various disease including major ailments like kidney, heart, diabetes etc. To begin with, the population registry will cover the area in and around Tirupati and will be expanded to cover entire Chittoor district and later Rayalaseema.
In other words, the registry in the long run will be a zone level record on heath status including sudden diseases occurring due to various factors which will be helpful for the policy makers to evolve suitable strategy to control them and also improving health status of the population. VLPK Director Rajiv Shrigopal Bajaj said that his company impressed over SVIMS track record of free medical services to thousands of people, donated Rs 12 crore to SVIMS to set up CfAR and assured to continue the support.
