With the Goods and Services Tax (GST) all set to be implemented across the country from July 1, the state governments are focusing on an alternative means to get tax exemption for essential activities and products.

The Andhra Pradesh government too has sent it's representation to the Central Government seeking tax exemptions on work contractors.

Accordingly, the GST Council has approved the state government's tax exemption request for prasadam (Tirupati Laddu) and human hair at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).

AP Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu made this representation at the 17th GST Council meeting held in New Delhi on Sunday where he said that TTD was a reputed religious trust involved in services to lakhs of devotees daily and hence be exempted from GST registration.
