Visakhapatnam: People had a miraculous escape when an RTC bus overturned near Port Hospital junction on the National Highway 16 here on Monday. One passenger suffered serious injuries and 15 escaped with minor injuries.Traffic came to a grinding halt between Birla Junction and IV town police station junction.

Police said an RTC bus driver driving the vehicle from Narsipatnam to Visakhapatnam at a high speed swerved his steering to the right to avoid hitting an auto-rickshaw which came on its way abruptly. The driver lost control over the vehicle and the bus overturned.

Traffic police said one elderly woman received head injuries, while others received very minor injuries. Highway patrolling vehicle which was nearby rushed to the spot and the staff took part in restoration activities with the help of a few other police teams.

Fourth Town Sub-Inspector K Suresh said the driver applied brakes suddenly when the auto-rickshaw came in front of the bus. As the road was also wet, the bus hit the divider and overturned. However, the driver was not able to tell whether the auto-rickshaw came from the side road leading to Port hospital or it was plying on the National Highway.

"We cannot know now as there are no CC cameras at that Port hospital junction. Moreover the passengers too dispersed from the spot when we were busy in clearing the traffic. Eyewitnesses did not notice auto-rickshaw number.

The RTA officials will find out whether there was any brake failure,” the SI said.Following the mishap, traffic was blocked from IV Town police station road to Kancharapalem road. The police ensured one-way traffic till the bus was shifted from the spot.
