Chittoor: City Mayor K Hemalatha said on Friday that the civic body is exploring alternative ways for supplying drinking water to residents with depletion of water levels in NTR Jalasayam. Speaking to The Hans India here, the Mayor stated that the existing water in the NTR Jalasayam would be sufficient to meet the drinking needs of the city for less than a month.

The Chittoor Municipal Corporation is supplying 10.23 Million Litres per Day (MLD) to city residents as against the total requirement of 21.34 MLD. Hemalatha stated that 38 energised borewells have become defunct from the total of 435. The civic body drilled more than 100 new energised borewells in the last three months.

But, there is no use of borewells as groundwater levels have gone down to 800 metres, the Mayor said and added that the civic body has undertaken the transportation of water through 45 hired tankers. She condemned the allegations of private water tankers are exploiting people due to shortage.
