Visakhapatnam: The officials of prohibition and excise (enforcement wing) intercepted a vehicle and seized 2,290 kgs of ganja at Uppa village in Hukumpeta mandal on Tuesday. They arrested two persons who were transporting the ganja reportedly to Tamil Nadu.

Sub-Inspector of Hukumpeta excise department (enforcement wing) U Nageswara Rao said on a tip off, they intercepted a heavy vehicle at Uppa where they have recovered a huge quantity of weed packed in bags. Police said that the accused stuffed ganja in gunny bags, placed them in the vehicle, on which they have covered a tarpaulin cover to mislead police. A pilot vehicle was ahead to caution the vehicle carrying the contraband. The main persons from Tamil Nadu were in the main vehicle.

The driver of the heavy vehicle and the pilot reportedly fled the spot.The arrested were identified as VV Chinna Rao (27) of G Madugula mandal and J Bala Murugan (32) of Madhurai of Tamil Nadu.

Sources from police said that the duo was given contract to make sure that the ganja reached Karasapadu area from where others would join to take it till Tamil Nadu. The police seized one Eicher van, one motor cycle and Rs 24, 000 cash and one mobile phone.
