He spoke to the media persons here on Thursday in the wake of the oath taken by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on protection of rivers while taking part in the Rally for Rivers conducted by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev on Wednesday.

Dr Singh said Naidu must comply with his oath and take steps to protect the rivers and allow the rivers to flow in their own way, which has been happening for millions of years.

“Rivers can’t be linked like roads. Every river has its own ‘Gene’ pool and character and one does not match with other river,” he stated.

He said that rivers in India were already polluted and diverting these polluted waters leads to large scale pollution. “Interlinking of rivers will be beneficial to big contractors,” he noted and added that efforts were on to interlinking of rivers with Rs.5 lakh crore in India.

Referring to clean waters in rivers, he said sand filters water and it should not be extracted. He expressed concern over the indiscriminate digging and exploitation of sand in Krishna river. He visited some areas downstream of Prakasam Barrage on Wednesday and noticed vanishing of sand due to indiscriminate digging.

Referring to construction of Amaravati, the new capital, he said the future generations would pay heavy price due to construction of capital in low lying area and reminded that proposed capital region is seven metres below the level of Krishna river and observed it was in Red zone area about 30 km from the river.

He said the residence of Chief Minister also built in blue zone area, where constructions are not allowed as per the norms.
He said Chief Minister must take measures to protect the river and people would follow him. Environmentalists Bolisetty Satyanarayana and social activist Anumolu Gandhi were also present.
