Vijayawada: Chittinagar Junction, one of the busiest junctions in the city, became hazardous and creating panic among the commuters and local residents due to increasing traffic for the past one month.

Heavy vehicles are unable to take left turn from K T Road towards Chitti Nagar tunnel to reach Gollapudi Junction and other areas up to Ibrahimpatnam and beyond as the road is very narrow to take left turn.

The officials closed Durga temple road from temple to Kummaripalem Centre for speedy construction of Durga flyover and diverted traffic via Chitti Nagar one month ago.

Chitti Nagar Road from Tunnel to Chitti Nagar Junction is used for two-way traffic with divider built in the middle of the road. Heavy vehicles passing towards Vidyadharapuram, Bhavanipuram, Ibrahimpatnam, Nandigama and Hyderabad are diverted via Chitti Nagar tunnel.

Every day thousands of vehicles pass via Tunnel road. The road is very narrow with width of less than 25 feet on either side. Consequently, heavy vehicle drivers are facing a challenging task of taking left turn without causing accidents to move towards Tunnel.

Existing electric pole at the corner of the road at Chitti Nagar Jbecome has become a big hurdle for the drivers. On the other hand, vehicles passing from Tunnel towards Chitti Nagar Junction are coming very fast giving a scope for collision of vehicles in the opposite direction.

Traffic police made make shift arrangement dividing the road into three parts. One way is used for moving towards Tunnel and the other two ways are used for vehicles moving from Tunnel to Chitti Nagar.

Creating three lines has become the biggest problem for the commuters and heavy vehicle drivers. Commuters are saying that the second make shift divider is the reason for all problems and it should be removed immediately to solve the problems.

When contacted a local traffic police official said the issue will be taken to the notice of higher officials for removal of makeshift divider, which is made of cones.

K Gangadhar, a local trader, said at least three accidents are taking place at Chitti Nagar Junction every day due to abnormal increase of traffic. Thousands of children pass via Chitti Nagar Junction due to existing dozens of schools and convents.

The police department higher officials are taking utmost care to check accidents at Chitti Nagar Junction in view of the increasing traffic and strict instructions given by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu to divert the traffic via Chitti Nagar Tunnel and close the Durga temple highway for speedy completion of Durga temple flyover works.

District Collector B Lakshmikantham inspecting Durga temple flyover works every week but there is no progress on speedy completion of works. It is not known when the flyover works would be completed and problems of One Town residents would end.
