Amaravati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has requested the Union Minister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari to help the state government in completing the ongoing Polavaram project by 2019.

Chandrababu Naidu discussed the progress of Polavaram project with Gadkari in Nagpur on Tuesday, according to informed officials. Thanking the Centre for releasing funds so far for the project, Naidu pitched for more support from the Union government to meet the project deadline.

The Nagpur meeting assumes significance in view of the Centre’s rejection of the state government’s suggestion for replacement of the existing primary contractor of Polavaram project, Transstroy. A week after Naidu wanted change of the contractor, Nitin Gadkari rejected the suggestion since the project was progressing well.

After receiving several complaints from the sub-contractors over delayed payments and stalled works, Naidu asked his officials to issue a notice to Transstroy and directed the officials to seek Centre's approval for switching the contractors.

This prompted Gadkari to make it clear that there won’t be any change of contractor, which prompted Naidu to visit Nagpur to request for the extended support.
