The prices of vegetables have been rising abnormally during the past few days as production was coming down and consuming of vegetables has risen in the month of Karthika.  Tomatoes became dearer and now the price of every vegetable is around Rs.80 in the open market and Rs.50 in Rythu bazaars.

Tomatoes became dearer and now the price of every vegetable is around Rs.80 in the open market and Rs.50 in Rythu bazaars.

Even brinjals, beans, carrot, beetroot also are being sold in the same way. The common man is unable to bear the brunt of rising prices. Lady fingers are now around Rs.40 and ribbed gourd is around Rs.60-70 in open market and we can purchase them by Rs.20 lesser than in Rythu Bazars. Bitter guard is also raised to Rs.40. Price of carrot is Rs.80 in Rythu Bazar and its crossed Rs.100 in open market.

As a result, the lower middle-class people have given up the idea of buying tomatoes and other vegetables and are feeling easy to purchase eggs, fish in these days. Now-a-days, even tank fish is available at Rs.120 per kilogram and street vendors are selling some un branded fish is available for Rs.40, Rs.50 also. The price of tomatoes is Rs.40 in Rythu Bazars and its around Rs 60-70 in private markets.

Actually, only the towns have Rythu Bazars and rest of the people in this district is required to purchase vegetables in market only. Even the consuming of vegetable is also high in this Karthika Masam as most of the women refrain from consuming non-vegetarian food.

Even Ayyappa devotees also won’t consume meat. As a result, the price of vegetables have skyrocketed in recent times. Even the leafy vegetables also becasme costlier than the previous month.

P Uma Maheswara Rao, Estate Officer of R&B Rythu Bazar, speaking to the media here on Monday said “Generally our local tomatoes would come to market in December and so far we need to import the same from other districts and other states.

Due to unfavorable conditions, the yield of tomatoes has come down even in Karnataka and Maharashtra and it affects the cost here.. Now our farmers are planting sapling of vegetables in our district and with in a month we can see the production and can get them in lower price. Until than we have to buy them at high price. ” He said.

K Radha, a house wife said “My kitchen expenditure has raised by 100 percent in the past few days due to the increase of price of vegetables and other commodities. Now I need to minimize the budget as this month is June and I need to spend more on books, uniforms of my children.” She said.
