Visakhapatnam: Even after the Supreme Court of India giving directions to the governments to recognise ‘transgenders’ as the third gender, the Andhra Pradesh government is not taking any steps for the welfare of the transgenders. Over 1.5 lakh transgenders in the State are struggling to lead their life but the government officials including doctors and the general public are not treating them as human beings.

Their parents refuse to support them and they are also facing social boycott. Majority of the transgenders are leading their life in the State by practicing begging as a profession. They are repeatedly requesting the governments to set up a welfare board to take up their issues, but in vain. Even the parents and family members are not accepting them, the transgenders are assisting their families by sending money earned through begging.

“Due to societal problems, parents are not accepting us as their children. Even the doctors are not treating us as human beings. Some doctors not even properly examining us or writing prescriptions. What is our fate? Even the people are praying and offering special rituals to Lord Shiva, who is half men and half women. Some of the parents are very cruel. They did not attend the funeral of a transgender when he dies. The parents are taking our money, but not accepting us,” Rukmini one of the transgenders in the city lamented.

In 2016, as many as 25 transgenders died in the State and some of them also committed suicides and murdered. But, there are no proper police investigations. Majority of the transgenders are committing suicide or murdered due to several reasons. Majority of the deceased aged between 20-26 years only. Five persons out of 25 deaths are brutally killed and those are not accounting as prestige murders, Rukmini told The Hans India.

We met Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and asked him to set up a board to look after the welfare our community. The Chief Minister assured us and announced to set u Transgender Welfare Board. We are asking the government to sanction Rs 1,000 monthly pension. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced to sanction Rs 1,000 monthly welfare pension to each transgender, but in vain, said AP Transgenders Association leader Sai Durga said.

One of the activists fighting for rights of transgenders, Rachana said that the State government was not taking any steps for the welfare of transgenders. In north India, the businessmen would encourage the transgenders by offering good amounts, but in South, there is no such environment, Rachana added.
