No takers for mini-gas cylinders
Tribal families residing on hill top areas in the agency across the state are not coming forward to take mini-gas cylinders of five kg. Under Deepam scheme, the state government has decided to supply mini-cylinders to tribals free of cost initially to adopt them towards gas consumption with an aim to achieve smoke free kitchens even in agency.

The government started the scheme in February this year and subsequently identified 1,57,443 families in all eight Integrated Tribal Development Authority (ITDA) areas in seven districts across the state who are living in hill top areas in agency. In Sitampeta ITDA limits in agency area in Srikakulam district, 530 habitations are located on hill top areas out of 1,239 habitations.
In 21 tribal sub-plan mandals in agency in the district, 4,612 families have been identified by the ITDA, revenue and civil supplies officials under Deepam scheme. Out of the total identified hill top families, 3,606 families’ details were recorded so far under the scheme in Sitampeta agency but only 98 families are coming forward to receive mini-cylinders.
“At present transport facilities are improved in the agency areas and even for hill top habitations as a result they are not interested to take mini-cylinders and they wanted big cylinders,” Sitampeta ITDA project officer Lotheti Shivasankar told The Hans India.
“Five KGs cylinders are not suitable for tribals residing on hill top areas as these cylinders are being emptied in less than 15 days whereas big cylinders of 14.5 kg are useful to them as they can be used for 50 days. Hence, tribals are not showing interest,” said a tribal leader Savarathota Mukhalingam.
“We have made efforts to handover mini- cylinders to hill top tribals but they are not coming forward to take,” admitted district civil supplies officer G Mohan Babu.
