Visakhapatnam: As many as nine militia members of the Galikonda Area Committee of banned CPI (Maoist) surrendered before the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) K Arif Hafeez at Narsipatnam in the district on Monday.

According to police, the surrendered militia members were identified as Jartha Venkata Rao, Korra Dasu, Korra Lingaraju, Korra Jagga Rao, Palika Narsu, Palika Ramesh, Korra Bandu, Palika Babu Rao and Korra Bangaraju.

All the members are in the age group between 20 to 25 years and all are native of Koyyuru mandal in Agency. The nine members joined in the group about five years ago, after allegedly threatening warnings from the PLGA Commander Kudumula Venkata Rao alias Ravi and Galikonda Area Committee Commander VRL Gopal alias Azad.

After observing the developments in Maoism, keen development activities in the rural areas and very particularly intensified policing, the members decided to lead their further life in the mainstream.

While producing the members before the media, the ASP said that the nine members have involved in offences such as supplying food to leaders in the outfit, attending the meetings of the Maoists, roping public for the Maoists meetings and few others. Noticing the development activities in the remote major areas and depletion of the leaders and cadre in the outfit were the major reasons behind the surrender of the militia members.
