Nellore: The ruling TDP members and BJP workers on Saturday had a verbal dual at the Gandhi statue over the comments made by Hindupur MLA N Balakrishna. Scuffle broke out between BJP and TDP leaders soon after the BJP leaders burnt an effigy of Balakrishna for his comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP leaders led by its district vice-president Midathala Ramesh organised a protest at Gandhi statue against the comments made by against Prime Minister. As part of their protest, they burnt an effigy of Balakrishna which irked the TDP leaders. TDP leaders led by K Balaji, followers of NUDA Chairman K Srinivasulu Reddy reached Gandhi statue and picked an argument with BJP leaders. Tension prevailed at the area as some TD workers attacked BJP leaders.

One town police rushed to the spot and shifted the agitators to police station to prevent untoward incidents. Police tightened security at Gandhi statue centre by deploying additional forces. III Town Circle Inspector B Papa Rao also rushed to the spot for managing the situation. BJP activist who received minor injuries were shifted to private hospital. BJP state general secretary S Suresh Reddy criticised the municipal administration minister P Narayana, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Balakrishna.
