Srikakulam: Experts from Medical Council of India (MCI) raised objections over the existing facilities and vacancies at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) medical college and teaching hospital.

The MCI team visited RIMS during May this year and inspected all wings following request from the college for increasing 50 MBBS seats in addition to the existing 100 seats and approval for PG seats.

Regarding facilities, the MCI team suggested renovating equipment at central sterilization units and ophthalmology wing. Every day on an average 450 inpatients and 1200 outpatients visit RIMS, which has 500 total beds and 21 wings.

The RIMS had 60 vacant posts including professors, associate and assistant professors. Each department needs a professor, three associate and nine assistant professors. In addition to it, six senior and another six junior resident doctors required to provide quality medical services at RIMS.

In mother and child healthcare (MCHC) ward as per norms 27 medical officers from professor to junior resident are required but only six persons are available.

Situation is similar in all other 20 departments at RIMS. In this backdrop, MCI team examined all facilities and raised objections and suggested to fulfil all requirements. After rectification of all requirements, the MCI team will visit RIMS once again, said its director A Krishna Veni. Resident medical officer (RMO) Dr B Ch Appala Naidu also expressed similar opinion.
