Srikakulam: The garbage recycling project, proposed to collect garbage from door to door across the city, has been remained on papers in Srikakulam city for the last ten years.

Initially the project was proposed to collect garbage from door to door in the city and in second stage, the garbage can be segregated into dry and wet. In the third stage, the officials planned to produce power and organic manure from wet garbage and to manufacture recycled goods like carry bags from dry garbage.

For manufacturing of organic manure, vermi compost units, sheds, internal roads, water, electricity facilities arranged at dumping yard at Patrunivalasa village near Srikakulam city by spending Rs 15 lakh.

To collect garbage from door to door, tricycles, wheel bars, plastic tubs, buckets and other material were purchased by the municipality. Another Rs 30 lakh spent for producing power through gas from wet garbage and a plant constructed at Khazipet water supply station near the city. But both are remained useless and not even a single KG manure, a unit power and recycled goods produced yet.

Every year on an average Rs 8.5 crore funds are being spent for sanitation management in the city. By using these recycled methods, the civic body can earn more revenue by selling power, manure and recycled goods.

“The recycling process is also environmental-friendly and useful to prevent pollution generated from garbage kept in open area,” municipal environment wing engineer J Shankara Rao said to The Hans India.

“We will use all available facilities for better garbage management in the city and proposals also prepared for revival of bio-gas plants, organic manure units, vermi compost sheds,” municipal corporation commissioner, R Sreeramulu Naidu told this newspaper.
