Medico Shilpa committed suicide due to harassment by HoD: CID

Tirupati: CID SP R N Ammi Reddy said on Friday that PG medico Dr Bellam Shilpa had committed suicide due to harassment by paediatric HoD Dr P Ravi Kumar at SVMC.
He said the CID had come to the conclusion following a detailed investigation into her death. In the case, Dr Kireeti and Dr Sashi Kumar of the same department had supported Ravi Kumar, he said
Unable to bear the harassment, Shilpa ended her life on August 8 by hanging herself at her residence at Pileru town in Chittoor district. The CID SP disclosed case investigation details to the media here on Friday at Tirupati regional office. Following the orders of the State government, the case was taken over by the CID police, Tirupati region, on August 10.
The CID had formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the case. The CID sleuths examined 47 witnesses. The witnesses include complainant, close relatives, husband, PG medical students, faculty in SVMC, former PGs of paediatrics, persons concerned with examination department etc.
“The SIT had collected digital evidence and inquiry reports of various committees formed in this regard. Our cops verified the examination pattern of NTRUHS and examined some of the Professors associated with answer sheet evaluation”, said Ammireddy.
“As per SIT investigation it is established that the A1 Dr Ravi Kumar used to behave rudely and indulge in oral communication with sexual overtones towards the deceased Dr Shilpa. When the deceased objected to such behaviour, differences cropped between the two.
There are other victims of harassment by Dr Ravi Kumar. When Shilpa and her husband approached the Principal to get the issues sorted out, he promised to do justice, but he failed to respond. Though Dr Kireeti and Dr Sashi Kumar did not harass her, they were supporters of A1,” the SP mentioned.
Further, he added that as the college authorities failed to respond to her complaint, Shilpa lodged a complaint with Governor ESL Narasimhan thourhg an email. Later she had lodged a complaint at Alipiri Police Station.
However, she withdrew her complaint after coming to know that a committee was constituted by the District Collector to probe into her complaint. But the committee had delayed its report. Finally, she did not get any justice despite lodging a complaint with various authorities. The SP said they had secure evidence to establish the offence of abetment to suicide against A 1, A2 and A3.
