Bangladeshi national’s gang nabbed for circulating fake Indian currency

Hyderabad: Four people including a student from Bangladesh and three others from West Bengal were arrested by the city police on Tuesday for possessing and circulating counterfeit currency. The gang was successful in circulating fake currency worth Rs 20 lakh in Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam in the past five months.

On Monday, the Sultan Bazar police received information about a person who attempted to buy a pen worth Rs 50 by giving a bogus Rs 1,000 note. On detaining the accused, the police unearthed a huge counterfeit currency circulating racket that was being operated in the city.

East Zone Dr A Ravinder said, “On Monday the accused Razibul went to a shop in Koti to buy a pen worth Rs 50, where the vendor identified the fake note and informed the police. Based on his confession the teams raided his rented house in Langer Houz and arrested him.”

Razibul Hoque (19), Asif Iqbal alias Rohan (23) and Minarul Islam (19), all from West Bengal were arrested, the police said adding that two others namely Sofikul Islam (45) and Shorif, who make counterfeit currency in West Bengal are yet to be nabbed.

Investigation revealed that Md Al Masrekin, the Bangladesh national, came to India in 2009 to pursue higher studies in West Bengal. During his stay there, he developed friendship with fake currency makers Sofikul and Shorif and Sathy dragged his friends Razibul, Rohan and Minarul into the racket by offering huge commissions on exchange of fake currency.

Accordingly, they came to Hyderabad with Rs 6 lakh worth fake currency notes of Rs 1,000 denomination in July this year and exchanged it Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad.

Again in October, they came back to Hyderabad with Rs 5 lakh fake currency and stayed in a lodge at Lakdikapul for a day and then rented a house in Bapu Nagar in Langer Houz posing as students. On completion of circulation of notes, Sharif and Rohan went back to West Bengal and brought another Rs 5 lakh counterfeit currency.

DCP Dr Ravinder said that the teams have seized as many as 381 fake notes of Rs 1,000 denomination and Rs 30,000 cash, four mobile phones and passport of Sathy issued in Bangladesh.

“Further investigation is on in the case and efforts are being made to nab counterfeit currency makers,” the DCP said.
