Hyderabad police takes terror operative into custody

Hyderabad: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), constituted by the city police on Friday took into their the custody the alleged terror operative Syed Zakir Rahim, wanted in connection with the conspiracy to eliminate certain BJP leaders.
A resident of Saidabad, Rahim fled the country in the year 2004 after his name figured in the conspiracy case. One more case was also registered against him under the provisions of Explosive Substances Act.
He was living in Riyadh, where Saudi authorities arrested him in May last year and after the completion of formalities, he was deported back to India. He arrived at New Delhi on Thursday and from there he was brought to city on Friday.
The SIT will produce him before the court concerned before seeking police custody for questioning, a senior police official said.
Rahim is the brother-in-law of wanted terrorist Farhatullah Ghori, who is presently in Pakistan. Ghori is wanted in two important cases – one related to the alleged attack on Akshar Dham in Gujarat and the other one is LeT case registered and investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
According to NIA, Ghori had influenced several youth from India in joining ISSI and its sponsored terror outfits and facilitated training for them in espionage, cyber crime and handling of weapons.
Sources also said that Rahim had been in touch with Ghori and both of them recruited youth at the behest of ISI and facilitated training for them in Pakistan, besides pooling and distributing funds through hawala methods.
SIT officials expect to elicit vital information relating to ISSI recruits and sleeper cells in Hyderabad and other parts of South India.
