Hyderabad: Controlling illegal sale of black jaggery which is used as a primary ingredient for production of ‘gudumba’ (Illicitly Distilled Liquor) seems to have become a major challenge for the Prohibition and Excise Department which is trying to put an end to the gudumba menace.

Senior official of the department said unless the authorities succeeded in controlling the sale of this primary ingredient, the production of gudumba could not be controlled. “Black jaggery being the main ingredient for the production of liquor, our efforts are to check its sales which will indirectly affect the production of illegal liquor,” the official said.

He said that intensified and coordinated action of various wings of the department had resulted in seizure of more than 42,797 kilogram of black jaggery this year so far as against 1,912 kgs last year. They had been asked to put an end to this menace by the end of this year, he added.

With the increased raids, the sources said they had been able to seize 1,696.85 litres of gudumba and arrested 381 persons. Further, 15,490 litres of ‘wash’, an intermediate material used for the production has been seized and 151 cases have been booked. Official claimed that Ibrahimpatnam and Dhoolpet were two areas where illegal liquor production is high.
