Hyderabad: The south zone police on Tuesday arrested 17 people and a juvenile for allegedly lynching a transgender after mistaking her for a kidnapper. The police also released the CCTV footage which showed unfolding of the horrible incident.

The CCTV footage showed that, on Saturday at 11 pm, two crossdressers went into Ajeem Hotel for begging. The hotel owner gave Rs 10, but they demanded for more. Meanwhile, a person in the hotel, after observing the crossdressers, approached the hotel owner and showed him some videos which were circulated on WhatsApp. Soon, the person found a tyre on the hotel premises and started beating the crossdressers, who ran fearing for their lives.

However, the attacker, Hussain Muqthar, followed them and garnered the attention of others, who joined him in beating up the victims, police said. One of the victims, Chandraiah, succumbed to the blows while undergoing treatment at Osmania Hospital.

Meanwhile, two other crossdressers, Ravi and Narsimha, were rescued by a Moulana. He had convinced the mob to not resort to such things in the holy month of Ramzan, police said.

During the investigation, the police gathered CCTV videos recorded in the vicinity of the crime scene and also collected videos captured by onlookers to identify the assailants. After the mob lynching, the police interrogated around 40 persons and narrowed down on the accused.

Police said that they would arrest more persons after the scrutiny of available videos. The police also arrested three reporters who work for YouTube channels for allegedly spreading the false news.
