Hyderabad: Telangana State government has embarked on a mission to distribute 10 lakh LED bulbs in the State. The mission is intended to save over 7.5 crore units worth Rs 43 crore every year.

According to a senior official in Telangana New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (TNREDCL), it is estimated that about 90 per cent of energy can be saved by using LED bulbs.

Apart from saving conventional power, it would benefit the society in achieving the energy security and help in protection of environment and reduce the household energy consumption, the official added.

It would also help in reducing the demand and supply gap and load shedding during peak hours. The energy thus saved can meet the demand of commercial and industrial sectors.

The TNREDCL would take up the distribution along with the support of discoms. It decided to distribute 10 lakh bulbs in the State and fixed a target of saving over 7.50 crore units.

The LED bulbs would be distributed as a part of the “Demand Side Efficient Lighting Programme” (DELP) being implemented to save electricity consumption. This effort would result in saving of Rs 43 crore for the discoms every year.

Keeping aside the saving in terms of money, the officials are enthusiastic about saving about 7.5 crore units of power. This effort would mean decreasing the domestic demand for power and this could be transfer to commercial sector.

The meeting held under the chairmanship of Energy Secretary Aravind Kumar proposed to distribute LED bulbs to replace incandescent bulbs. Under the project, each household would be provided two LED bulbs of 9 watts each.

As much as 80 per cent power could be saved if conventional lights are replaced with LED lamps. As energy saving will be quite substantial, the board has decided to distribute 2 numbers of 9 watt LED bulb to each household on exchange of two 60 watt incandescent bulbs to save power consumed.

The officials would start the distribution of LED bulbs from Medak, the home district of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and also in Nizamabad.
Officials are expecting to save 80 per cent power by replacing normal electricity bulbs.

The authorities would give two LED bulbs of nine watts each by taking two 60 watts bulbs. For using nine watts instead of 60 watts the power saved would be 53 watts which means every day four hours of saving would result in saving of 77 units per year.

If 10 lakh bulbs are used, the power saved would be 7.70 crore units. Each LED bulb would cost Rs 80 and for 10 lakh bulbs it would cost Rs 8 crore. The discoms are purchasing power at the rate of Rs 6 a unit. By using LED bulbs, the discoms can save them Rs 43 crore.
