Warangal: At last, the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) to hold its second Council meet on Thursday. Denizens, who expected all round development especially after the GWMC got its elected body in place last year after a gap of six years, still find that development is a far cry.

With the TRS Corporators tugging in different directions to have a sway over the others, the second Council meet didn’t take place for the last 10 months, ruling party sources say.

To add more to this, the inordinate delay in release of funds from the government held the development of the city back.

The first general body meeting that held on April 4, 2016 decided to allocate Rs 10 lakh each to all the 58 Divisions to carry out minor works and repairs. Thereafter, neither there was a Council meeting nor there was any significant development.

This despite the Clause C of the Section 88 of the Municipal Corporation Act 1955 that clearly mandates the Council members to meet at least once in three months.

Admitting that there was a delay in holding the Council meeting, Mayor Nannapuneni Narender told The Hans India: “There is no specific reason behind it. It took a lot of time for us to streamline the administration which has no bounds in the absence of civic body for six years.”

Thereafter, incessant rains wreaked havoc in the city shifting our focus to bring normalcy in the city, he said.

Referring to the release of Rs 75 crore from the State government and Rs 94 crore from the Centre as part of the Smart City initiative, he said that Greater Warangal now stands to witness a huge development in the coming days. However, each Division was allocated Rs 50 lakh recently, the works are yet to begin.

Forum for Better Warangal president Pulluru Sudhakar said: “There is an imperative need for the elected body to discuss every policy decision and issues faced by the people. It’s not fair to carry out all the decisions with the consent of the standing committee bypassing the Council meeting.”

Referring to the appalling condition of the Bus stand, Waddepally, NGO’s Colony, Desaipet, Kareembad and other roads in the GWMC area, the BJP Rural Warangal District President Edla Ashok Reddy accused the State government of siphoning off the Central funds meant for other developmental works.
