Choppadandi (Karimnagar): The proposed Mega Leather Park in Station Ghanpur (Jangaon district) has kicked up a row with some leaders of the Opposition parties, especially the BJP, and the dalit organisations in Karimnagar district raising a hue and cry over the TRS government for dumping the long-pending demand of the locals.

It may be noted here that proposal to set up a leather park at Rukmapur village under Choppadandi mandal was first mooted in 2003 by the then NDA government. After the authorities identified 134 acres near Rukmapur village for the purpose, for reasons unknown, the then Telugu Desam government chose Nellore district, dropping Rukmapur.

Later in 2008, the then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy assured to set up the park in Rukmapur. However, the project didn’t make headway thereafter.

Moreover, during the regime of N Kiran Kumar Reddy, the land was allocated to APSP 17th Battalion. Recently, the Telangana government moved the battalion proposal to Sardarpur in Rajanna-Sircilla district.

Against this backdrop, recently Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development KT Rama Rao had announced in the Assembly that a Mega Leather Park with an outlay of Rs 270 crore will come up in Station Ghanpur.

Since then BJP Kisan Morcha and several dalit outfits have been vociferous demanding the government to establish the leather park in Rukmapur.

BJP Kisan Morch national general secretary Polsani Sugunakar Rao said: “Karimnagar lost all its sheen after the reorganisation of the districts and there is an imperative need to give good fillip to region’s economy by setting up the park.”

Stating that number of slaughter houses in Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Adilabad undivided districts is high; he contended that Rukmapur is ideal to set up the park instead of shifting it to Station Ghanpur.

Former Karimnagar MP Ponnam Prabhakar said: “Due to inability of the sitting TRS MP B Vinod Kumar, the government laid its focus on Station Ghanpur to establish the Mega Leather Park while dumping Rukmapur.”

Contradicting with the BJP, he said that there is no point in arguing that government has shifted the leather park to Station Ghanpur from Rukmapur.

Station Ghanpur is also one among the seven selected for the leather parks. The BJP should demand the government to set up a leather park in Rukmapur instead of pointing to others, he added.

“Never there was concrete proposal to set up a leather park in Rukmapur,” Bodiga Shobha, Choppadandi TRS legislator, told The Hans India, accusing the Opposition of trying to defame the government.

Further she wanted to know from the Opposition whether the then NDA government or its successor Congress had initiated funds or issued any GO to establish the leather park in Rukmapur.
