Rakshitha teams mulled to check crime against girls, women in Nalgonda

Nalgonda: The district police in association with district administration are likely to form girls’ safety committees in the name of ‘Rakshitha’.

Teams of Rakshitha at village-level will consist of village panchayat officer, leaders of Self Help Groups, Sarpanch, village revenue officer, school headmaster, Anganwadi teacher and Asha worker.

These teams will create awareness among girls and women about the purpose of Rakshitha teams and various welfare schemes of State and Central governments launched for the welfare of girls and women.

The mandal-level Rakshitha committees will have Mandal Parishad Development Officer, Mandal Revenue Officer, Station House Master, Mandal Education Officer, Integrated Child Development Services scheme mandal-level officer, DRAD mandal-level officer and a government doctor from Primary Health Centre.

The duties and responsibilities of these committees is to identify the places where infanticide of girls taking place, visit all the girls hostels and schools and inspect the same and chalk out their problems with regard to facilities, and also inquires about the local sponsors and submit all the observations in the form of report to the district officials team for future course of action.

During the visit of government girls schools, the committees will check availability of water, compound wall, electricity, watchman and CCTVs.

The committees form a counseling centre in each school with a lady teacher to share the problems being faced by girls and to provide guidance.

The committees will also check the health aspects of students including malnutrition and personnel problems.

To launch the Rakshitha programme, the District SP Prakash Reddy and Collector Gaurav Uppal on Tuesday interacted with police and other officials at DPO meeting hall in Nalgonda. The duo explained the aims and responsibilities of Rakshitha committees.

Speaking to The Hans India, SP Prakash Reddy informed that Rakshitha will help in preventing offences against girls, infanticide, foeticide, baby selling, child marriage and women trafficking.

“Make the girls aware of various types of crimes and whom to approach,” he said, adding that committees will also help girls in career counseling etc.

He further added that the committee members also educate girls about good touch, bad touch and screen movies on girls’ safety.

“A woman constable will teach self defence techniques to girl students to apply in critical times to save themselves from eve teasers,” he informed.
