Officials told to prevent child marriages in Kothagudem

Addressing the meeting organised by the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and Girls Advocacy Alliance (GAA) at the conference hall in the Collectorate on Thursday, he said that massive awareness programme should be undertaken throughout the district to make villagers part of the awareness campaign to prevent child marriages. The village-level committees, which should organise awareness programmes every month, should take the responsibility of preventing child marriages, he added.
He suggested the officials to take the initiative to prevent child marriages which are taking place in Girijan Tandas of the district. “The teachers, working Ashram schools, should inform the students about the ill-effects of child marriages,” he added. The government employees in the villages should inform higher officials in case of any reported child marriages in their villages, he said.
The District Collector said that a quick glance at the applications received under the Kalyana Lakshmi scheme, revealed that most of the brides were below 18 years old. He opined that education is the only way to avoid child marriages and the teachers and officials should see to it that the girl children do not drop out of schools.
Dr Mamta Raghuveer, member of State Child Rights Commission, stressed on the importance of stopping child trafficking. “The percentage of literacy among the girls should be increased,” she added.
The girls should be encouraged to undergo vocational courses to make them financially independent, she said and appealed to the parents to treat their sons and daughters equally.
M L Prasad, member of Child Welfare Committee, said that awareness camps should be held in all the mandals to prevent child marriages.
District Women and Child Welfare Officer Jhansi Lakshmi, Child Welfare Committee Member Gandhi Babu, DM&HO Dr Venkateswarlu, DEO Hayagrivachary, Tahsildars, CDPOs, MPDOs, One Town SI Jitender, GAA District Programme Officer Raghuram, Coordinator Sandeep, Sunita, Indira, Durga Bhavani and others were present.
