Warangal: Seed bombs to get explode soon across the barren and hilly areas. Nothing to worry as these bombs are not explosives but organic seed balls aimed at increasing the green cover. Seed bombing is a technique of planting trees by embedding organic seed balls in the ground.

At a time when the forest cover is dwindling fast, seed bombing is one such technique that helps to reclaim the green spaces. However, the seed bombing method has been there since the times of ancient Egypt, it was Japanese farmer Masanobu Fukuoka, who popularised the technique in mid-1940s.

The government which has plans to plant 44 crore saplings in the Edition-3 of the Haritha Haram has also resolved to adopt seed bombing technology to bolster its reforestation campaign. It’s learnt that the Ministry of Forests has plans to toss at least 1 crore seed balls involving all the State departments.

As part of the programme, the government also sought the expertise of a retried IAS officer from Karnataka K Amaranarayana, who was instrumental in growing dense forests on several hillocks in his State.

He conducted a workshop explaining the significance and necessity of the seed ball technology a couple of days ago at Hanamkonda in which several top officials participated.

A seed bomb is made of clay, compost and water ensuring seed in the centre. The dried up balls will be thrown into targeted barren and hilly land ahead of monsoon.

Against this backdrop, the Warangal Commissionerate Police has become the first State department to promote the seed bombing programme with the initiative taken by the Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu.

He involved the Commissionerate police and the trainee constables in making the seed balls on Thursday. Haritha Haram OSD Priyanka Varghese said: “Having huge tracts of barren land, it’s difficult to improve green cover in our State. Seed balling is a very easy method of reforestation in hilly and barren areas.”

Amrapali Kata, Warangal Urban district collector, and Conservator of Forests MJ Akbar commended the Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu for his initiation in promoting the seed bomb technology.
