Even after 13 yrs, PV’s village lies in neglect

It was evident that history has not been kind to PV, also known as Rao, who steered the country towards economic reforms as he didn’t get his due credit.
Ironically, he may have named his autobiographical novel, Insider, but for the Congress by and large he remained an outsider, after he led a minority government successfully for a full five-year term between 1991 and 1996.
After his death, the then Congress government promised to turn PV’s ancestral home in Vangara into a museum besides taking up a host of measures to attract the visitors from across the country.
Travesty is such that it took nine years for the government even to put up a bronze statue of PV in his native village. The statue, which was crowd funded along with PV’s near and dear, was unveiled by the then Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on April 27, 2013.
Thereafter, there was no move on part of the government. Speaking to The Hans India, PV Madan Mohan, the nephew of PV and currently a senior journalist with the All India Radio, said: “A lot was promised in memory of PV, but they remained words, not deeds.
Whatever the importance PV got was due to the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. It may be noted here that KCR demanded Bharat Ratna for PV. KCR also declared birth anniversary of PV will be celebrated as an official function.”
Long back, the Warangal Municipal Corporation passed a resolution to name Kakatiya University-Kazipet Bypass road after PV, but it didn’t happen. The demand to name indoor stadium (opposite Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium) after PV was also ignored, he lamented.
Profile: PV Narasimha Rao was adopted son of Pamulaparthy Ranga Rao of Vangara village in erstwhile Karimnagar district (now in Warangal Urban). He was born to Rukmini Devi and Seetharama Rao of Vangara village in Lakinepalli village of Warangal district on June 28, 1921.
An active freedom fighter, who joined full-time politics after Independence, rose to national prominence and held several diverse portfolios in the Cabinets of both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
He also made his mark as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for his land reforms and strict implementation of land ceiling act.
He became prime minister when he was all set to retire from politics and return to Hyderabad following the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. He died on December 23, 2004.
