1965 Act amendment paves way to solve problem

Mandamarri: It seems that the government has finally gave green signal for holding the municipal elections in Mandamarri constituency. The amendment of 1965 Municipal Act made it easy for conducting the polls.

The municipality with a population of 52,381, has been divided into 24 wards. The then government in 1995 announced the Mandamarri town as municipality. An election notification was issued in 1998 announcing the quota for the SCs.

The Central government applied 1/70 Act in the area due to the high population of Scheduled Tribes. However, without considering the enactment, the State government reserved the Municipal Chairman post to Scheduled Castes.

Local tribal leader Maddi Ram Chandar filed a petition in the High Court challenging the State government‘s order reserving the seat for SCs. The High Court immediately stayed the elections.

The locals alleged that the development of the town had come to stand still since then. With the government making amendment to the Municipal Act, 1965, the Municipal Chairman post was reserved for STs.

Moreover, 50 per cent of wards were also reserved for ST women and the rest of them are reserved for other categories, according to their ratio in the population.

It is learnt that an ST candidate will be elected as the Chairperson for the Municipality. With the municipal elections been stayed for the past 22 years, the development has come to halt here. People have been facing hardships of cleanliness and drinking water since then.

Now with the news, people are happy stating that their area will develop if the Sgovernment conducts elections.
