Los Angeles [U.S.A]: A week after its official announcement, Quentin Tarantino's 'Star Trek' movie is back on track at Paramount Pictures with 'The Revenant' screenwriter Mark L. Smith hired to write the script.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the scribe known for writing last year's Oscar-nominated movie 'The Revenant', is on board for the 'Star Trek' movie Tarantino is developing with filmmaker JJ Abrams.

The news of working on the R-rated project first emerged on December 4. Details of the plot are still under wraps.

The 'Hateful Eight' helmer created a writer's room last month with Smith, Lindsey Beer, Drew Pearce and Megan Amram. Smith has been considered the frontrunner for the job.

'Star Trek', the first film in the rebooted franchise based on Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry, earned more than USD 380 million worldwide in 2009.

The second installment, Star Trek Into Darkness, earned more than USD 460 million worldwide when it opened in May 2013. The series' third film, Star Trek Beyond, which opened on July 22, 2016 made over USD 343 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, Tarantino is focused on his next project about the Charles Manson murders.

Tarantino's next project is an untitled film is set in Los Angeles in the 1960s and `70s and is believed to involve the actress and model Sharon Tate, who was murdered by members of Charles Manson's notorious family in 1969.

The Manson Family movie will be released on August 9, 2019, which is also the 50th anniversary of Tate's death.
