U turns for metro rail causes traffic jams
The closure of the junction at Mettuguda is leading to heavy traffic jams at the St Anthony’s church U turn some 100 yards away resulting in traffic coming to a standstill for almost 15 – 20 minutes during office hours. Ever since the cross roads junction was closed some eight months ago, motorists coming from Lallaguda, Alugaddabavi, Tarnaka and Secunderabad station are having a harrowing time.
The closure of the junction at Mettuguda is leading to heavy traffic jams at the St Anthony’s church U turn some 100 yards away resulting in traffic coming to a standstill for almost 15 – 20 minutes during office hours. Ever since the cross roads junction was closed some eight months ago, motorists coming from Lallaguda, Alugaddabavi, Tarnaka and Secunderabad station are having a harrowing time.
Residents living in and around Mettuguda and Tarnaka complain about the need to keep the junction closed as the metro work between Nagole and Mettuguda is complete. Ravi, a resident of Mody’s Compound says, “The pillars are up and even trial runs are underway. Traffic can easily move below the viaducts, there is no need to keep the junction closed. People coming from the interior roads of Mettuguda and planning to travel to Malkajgiri and beyond need to go all the way up to Alugadabavi U turn.”
Likewise, people coming from Secunderabad station and Rail Nilayam side who wish to get into the colonies inside Mettuguda have to go up to St Anthony’s church and take a U turn. Melinda, a resident of Keshavpuri says, “On Tuesdays when thousands visit the church, traffic comes to a halt.”
Traffic congestion is also a reality on the Begumpet-Secunderabad and SR Nagar-Ameerpet stretch. The traffic police did create two passages at Begumpet stretch where a pillar is coming up for the proposed station and policemen regulate traffic there are no police personnel posted at Mettuguda. Rakesh, a software employee and resident of Habsiguda says,
“The average travelling time during office hours has increased by 30-40 minutes. Now that the work is completed in the stretch, the metro and traffic police authorities can open the Mettuguda junction.”
