Qutub Shahis’ patronage to Telugu
The Qutub Shahis and Asaf Jahis promoted Telugu and the importance they accorded to it can be seen on currency notes in the form of denomination mentioned in the language on them. The Qutub Shahis and Asaf Jahis extended patronage to the language during their rule between 1518 and 1948.

Historian and heritage activist Mohammed Safiullah who has been collecting rare manuscripts, coins, photographs, memorabilia and coins pertaining to both Qutub Shahis and Asafjahis says, “For over 400 years, the Muslim rulers encouraged Telugu as well as Dakkani and Urdu.
The currency with the denomination in Telugu is evidence enough.”
The Qutub Shahis gave Telugu the status of official language and in the hinterland barring Hyderabad the official correspondence was done in Telugu language.
The rulers also elevated Telugu writers, poets and artisans. Madanna started as a clerk was appointed chief of royal treasury, Nephew of Akkanna, Kancherla Gopanna was given the title ‘Ram Bakth’ for his contributions to Bhakti literature.
