Kothagudem: The Matruthva Prayojana Scheme, recently introduced by the Centre, has benefited the poor women in Khammam and Bhadradri districts who suffer due to malnutrition at the time of conceiving and lose infants after delivery. The scheme envisages financial assistance of Rs 6,000, which proved to be a boon to pregnant women.

Women of the two districts suffer from anemia (lack of sufficient blood). According to the latest UNICEF survey, of the every 1,000 births in the State, 25 infants die within 25 days.

Such deaths occur in the two districts as women and infants top the lists of those suffering from lack of blood. Women from the two districts account for 71.20 per cent in the 15-49 age group and children of six to 59 months for 72.20 per cent.

As many as 2,500 children of the Bhadrachalam agency area have so far been identified to be suffering from anemia . The Central assistance, to be extended only for the first two deliveries, would be received by every pregnant woman in three phases.

An amount of Rs 3,000 is paid as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed. In the next two phases, Rs 1,500 each would be given soon after the delivery and three months post delivery.

Additional DM&HO Dr P Pullaiah said the scheme would benefit many poor from both districts. Women should have to compulsorily show interest in having deliveries in government hospitals, as the scheme benefits apply to only such women, he said.
